Primal Ruminations
The Love Machine
The Love Machine
I saw a report on the evening news.
A team of Scientists
Observed he brains of people
Deep in love,
Through Magnetic Resonance Imaging technology.
Volunteers for the experiment
Were all college students under the spell
Of Cupid's sling of arrows.
They found the activity associated
With what was considered True Love
Was deep inside
The core of the brain,
At the most fundamental level,
The seat of all cognizant and unconscious awareness,
The bottom of the well…
Deeper even then the instincts of hunger and survival
Behind the multitudinous layers
Of human consciousness
Those tested, whose love appeared most intense
Generated the greatest activity at this
Most primal level.
One could presume,
From the results of this experiment,
That people could be examined for the degree
Or amount, of love
They have for another individual.
Imagine the consequences --
Marriages need not linger,
Engagements may not last…
Liars would be exposed…
People could be tested against a group
To determine with whom they had a crush .
And arranged marriage
Could take on a whole new meaning.
Matchmaking could become a true science
With measurable results
In mathematics, physics and bio-chemistry
No animals were tested in this experiment
So this insists further investigation
And I for one, would like to know
Whether animals share this identifiable state of Love
With each other
Or are they simply the cold and self-serving entities
Our consumer pragmatism insists
To dispel all guilt
And preserve the viability that our existence,
Our life force,
Is dependent on absorbing theirs…
I'm sure the Teutonic Cardinal Knights
Money bending rabbis
Or goat eating Imams,
Could get the scientific community
To back them up on that one
And speaking of religion,
Why don't we hook up some of these bishops or
Bible belting ministers to one of these scanners
Then maybe we can get a better picture
Of what the love of God really means
We could measure one against the other
Rating them on a scale of piety
And why stop there,
We could test our politicians for their compassion quotient
We could see how much light ---
Or darkness,
Is at the bottom line of their agendas
Because isn't deceit
The germ that is first
To contaminate the purity of love,
Creating a domino effect
Of sub atomic changes
Low frequency innuendo
And the softly closing doors,
That mark its impending demise?
How then does love come and go?
How does it leave its nest at the base of our brains
And drift towards the cortex of the rational mind,
And finally off into space?
Or off to infect the next poor sap
Who stumbles through its foggy ether?
Can it be contained?
Can it be cultivated and nourished,
And fenced in like livestock?
Or must it fly away
Like the souls of dead things
Perhaps for once,
Technology can play the role
Of arbiter of the spirit.
A computer guru
Who can measure your progress,
A kind of personal trainer
That helps you with soul-palates
That build the core dynamics
Of dopamine production and reception
Increasing the capacity for giving love
And receiving love.
Maybe the ripple effect of this love yoga
Will rub off on a culture so predicated
On self service,
And the hatred of anything
That attempts to mitigate its boundaries --
That this appetite for unceasing consumption
At the expense of the planet,
(Used as an excuse
For its self preservation),
Will just dissipate
Into the magnetic flux
From whence it came.
And a gradual rapture of understanding
Will percolate through the sphere of
Human endeavor
Creating a renaissance of the spirit
Generating love
Shining light….
But I doubt it,
We'll probably all kill each other
Before that happens
