Musings by The Poet Loriet
Handy Man Needed
I need to learn
to be a fix-it-yourself-er.
There just aren't
enough hours in the day.
I plod down the hall,
reminded that my toilet
is still running.
Scared of an outrageous
water bill,
I jiggle the handle
to no avail,
take the lid off,
cluelessly scan the contents...
Perplexed, I slam the lid,
mutter, "I hate your guts,"
and glance at the tub
that needs scraped
and re-caulked.
I need a good friend
who is coincidentally
adept at plumbing.
I walk out in the hall,
greeted by a spark
as the hall light goes out...
again...
I climb up on a chair
to change the bulb
and hear a loud rumble
from the basement
(washer load uneven).
As I walk downstairs,
I'm reminded...
again...
that my carpet
needs replaced badly.
I close my eyes,
dreaming that my feet
are sinking into plush
cream-colored Berber.
Exhausted, I fall into
the center of my
sleeping-single-in-a-double
bed, closing my eyes,
trying to forget
the other reason I
need a handyman,
but James Taylor
feels it's his duty
to remind me in song,
"I fix broken hearts...
Oh mama, I'm...
your handyman."
I hum myself to sleep,
so I can repair
in my dreams
what I can't fix
in the real world.
