For You Mum; At 80 Years Old!

She taught herself to knit, sew, read and write!

She never got to go to school!

The Nuns came once a month to teach English.

She weighs 84lb That's 6 stone over here!

She is now 4ft tall, that's 48 inches high.

She's tough!

And she's my mum!
------------------------

Well mum, it is your birthday,
And you're 80 years old!
You don't look a day over 90!
You look well on it, if I may be so bold!
Now from when you were a little girl,
Your life's been turbulent, that's true!
You've fought the fight, every day,
Because of all the things you've gone through!
You lived in hospital since you were 3 years old,
And came out at aged 16…
To a family you didn't even know,
Who wondered where you'd been!
But you weren't discharged at 16!
That came many moons later; that's true!
So all your years were fraught,
With the health things you went through!
But though you lived in a plaster cast…
For many, many years!
You'd come home of a weekend; but rarely,
And you sure the hell had no fears!
Cos you would shimmy down the drainpipe,
And leg it off to play!
But when my granddad found out,
Be sure there was hell to pay!

And one time you set the house on fire!!
Oh goodness gracious me!
They had to send for your father!
He was out at work you see!
As he came legging it up the road,
The fire-engines were already there!
He almost died of shock;
As the thick black smoke filled the air!
Another time the neighbour next door…
Saw an awful plight!
You hung the baby on the washing line!
And gave that poor woman a fright!
You pegged him to the washing line,
And swung him with all your might!
And when your father got home from work,
He played hell with you that night!
When you would be home on ‘leave,'
From the hospital that was your home,
If you were ever grounded;
You always ran away from home!!!
Granddad would ground you for something,
And put you in your room,
But you wouldn't stay there for long!
And you always met your doom!!

Cos as you shimmied down the drainpipe,
You would be seen once again!
And the neighbours would yell for granddad,
Snitches they were, what shame!
So you were always found out!
And the neighbours, who were ever so good;
Told tales off you all of the time!
Just as you knew they would!
Apart from that, you were an angel!! Yeah, right!
I doubt it, not from you've told me!
You always had everyone up the wall,
You split that plaster-cast most weeks you see!
And there you'd be in hospital;
Them poor doctors were always up the wall,
Cos there was little Mary, in a mess!
‘Get the plaster!' Was the general call!
So off you'd be almost every week,
For a new plaster-cast shiny white!
But by the time the kids had added their names,
It was always ruined that same night!

Well, what can I say to that mum?
Cos you were like me, a little cow!
As stubborn as a mule too!
But wow, just look at you now!
Cos you're 80 years old;
This June day and wow do you look good!
I hope that I look as good as you at 80 –
Well; it's in the genes so I guess I should!

Happy 80th Mum!!!
All my love

xxxxxxxxxx
