Midnight with The Possum

It's early in the morning and
There's staleness in my beer
That thudding in my head's
Telling me I shouldn't be here
The Possum's singing soulfully
I must have something in my eye
Because I'm far too old
For a song to make me cry
It's just another start
Of another weary day
Oh lord how I wish these blues
Would just please go away
It can't be long now
Before first morning light
I suppose I should try
To sleep a bit tonight
To help me face the world
Just hoping nobody knows
I'm unwashed and wearing
Most of yesterday's clothes
And I'll smile to all and sundry
The noisy office clown
Playing my part until
The sun is finally down
When it's just me and the Possum
And brandies and some beers
And bang before I know it
Another day is drawing near
