These ones I love

Emmie May

Down by the shore we played each day-
Me and my best friend, Emmie May.
Basking in the hot summer sun.
Cooling off in the ocean spray.

Those were days of laughter and fun.
Nothing to do but play and run.
Chasing the waves back to the sea.
Combing the beach ‘til day was done.

Two winsome sprites-Emmie and me.
Happy we were to be so free.
Then came this curse called growing up.
Then came responsibility.

No longer could we play like pups.
Our lives were filled with bigger stuff.
A sadness overcame the day-
I had to give my Emmie up.

See, I gave birth to Emmie May.
Not a good thing some would say.
But she made fun those lonely days-
My dear, sweet, silly Emmie May.
