Musings by The Poet Loriet
Out Of Body Experience
It wasn't me
who stood there numb
as the policeman
ran to our mini-van,
gun raised in mid-air,
and bellowed,
"Out of the car,
raise your hands
above your head...
You have the right
to remain silent."
It wasn't me
who stood there shaking
as you waived the
"right to remain silent,"
yelling,
"Look at what you did to me!,"
followed by
a stream
of "F" words
as our seven year old son
cried hysterically,
"I'm too young
to see Daddy get arrested!"
The TV theme song from Cops,
"Bad boys, bad boys,"
ran through my head
and I forced a smile,
trying to pretend
it wasn't me
living this
really bad scene...
Just a scene
from a Hollywood movie,
mid-afternoon,
suburbia,
two-story house
on the cul-de-sac,
two cars,
2.5 kids...
pool and swingset
in the backyard,
mom descended from
a long line of
Jewish princesses...
Upper middle class
white girls
don't have these things
happen to them
as the neighborhood
soccer moms
hold their kids,
draw their drapes,
and shut their eyes.
See no evil,
hear no evil,
speak no evil.
I just know
it couldn't have been
Me.
