Musings by The Poet Loriet

How Dare You Love Me

Just real quick,
I thought,
a quick call
to say I won't be home
right away
and there's pasta in the fridge...
so that's what I did.

I took a deep breath,
starting my monologue...
"The kids like it.  I'm surprised
because
it's kinda spicy, but..."

He cut me off
mid-sentence,
"I can't stop
thinking about you..."

The words hung in the air
as I swallowed hard,
a nonrelenting lump
caught in my throat,
tears burning my eyes,
splashing down my face.

Don't you dare
say you love me.
After years of my
telling you,
"I'm not happy,"
and you telling me,
"You're crazy"...

After I filed for divorce,
don't ask me,
"Why do I still
want to hold you?"

I've swallowed my pride,
dared to hope,
only to be hurt
by your hatred,
time and time again.

It's safer to be
emotionally distant.
I want to smash
the rainbow that was
our marriage
and rebuild it
on my own...
knowing how you taint
my true colors.

After years of avoidance,
how dare you...

How dare you
ask me to feel
after breaking my heart?

I won't do it.
Your tender words cut me.

Don't you dare
        love me...
              Not now...
                    It's too late.
