Musings by The Poet Loriet

Live Each Day As If...

Live Each Day As If...

In retrospect
of our nation's 9-11 tragedy...
I was deeply touched
at the glimpses of the lives
of the ones who lived in love,
the ones whose lives remain
shattered,
our nation's innocent...
Pieces of conversation
hang thickly in the  smoky mist
and continue to haunt me...

"He kissed my cheek and told me he loved me,
the same as he did every single morning."
"Our baby girl will know her daddy as a hero!"
"He always called the girls...
his little princesses."
"Pray the 'Our Father' with me...
(I forgive them)...
and tell my wife that I love her."

Life's too short to not live fully...
You've got to hug your babies tight.
Run your fingers through their silky hair.
Hold their faces gently in your hands.
Stroke their backs,
and make, "I love you" your mantra.

No matter how fervently they fight
for their independence,
hold their tiny hands
each time you cross the street.
Feed a cold, starve a fever.

Ride every merry-go-round,
and eat cotton candy with them!
Yes!  Let your tongue turn blue,
and giggle about it!

But, above all, teach them to love,
cry freely as you read them
"Chicken Soup" stories,
and show them it's always okay to care.

Then, when you find yourself on
that fated flight,
you will know fewer regrets,
perhaps mourning lost time together,
in this earthly world
but bonded forever in eternal life
Just fold them in a warm embrace.
"Hang on, baby!
We're going to heaven today."...
and close your eyes
forever...

Peacefully,
Lori Beal
