 reflections

his favourite character in fiction

I realised
deliberately avoided the eyes
refraining from the man's disguise

I respected
and greatly liked
his large straw hat
red lipped
with rich black
whiskers

I started
to laugh
when he asked me why
I kept repeating
overacting the role
of his favourite character in fiction
who did he think he was?

I wished
above all else
to forget
the large colourful reproduction
of the well-known
self portrait

I have forgotten
what he actually said
(I'm as good as those damn mountains)
and in some ways
(of course)
he was infinitely better
but not

I was thinking
(and how I longed to be left alone)
no longer playing a part
isolation
from the grace of God
and a dark unfriendly eye
