Half a mile of darkness

Half a mile of darkness down this little road
Then turn left down that little windy track
Just a few more yards of darkness and then
I will have travelled half a century back
There are lights in those windows
That seem to wave and call to me
I stand there and remember
Not the boy I used to be
Tomorrow we are marching
And who knows tomorrow's end
So in my mind I came back
To this old cottage like a friend
Pulled it from my memory
Embedded firm and deep
Will hold it there until
It comforts me to sleep
With those memories of a happy life
Memories of such happy days
And tomorrow morning is suddenly
Many many million miles of darkness away
