I Am Disabled – Not Dead!!!You know, it really irks me, a lot! This treatment that I sometimes get! Just because I am disabled! Does not mean that I am dead!! Ok, so I have a few glitches, but… Does that warrant the word itself? Because I have to be quite honest here- I even doubt that one myself! You see, it's a bit like this; People see my complaint because; I am usually sitting in a chair; But without that chair to help me around, You wouldn't know there's a problem there! Sometimes it really makes me mad! We all have disabilities! Oh, but trust me true, Some people see us in a different light, That's right, loads, maybe even you! Tell me, what is imperfect in your life? I bet there are more than a few! Because disability comes in many forms, Yep, I guess you know that's true! A disability of the mind can be seen, But other disabilities of the mind not so! Because the disabled person isn't always disabled, Sometimes it the 'able' person with the problem on show! Like the fella who said I was a waste of space, Who told me I should be dead… Now that's a disability of the worst kind, He is a fool for what he had said! Blindness, you can see that one, The white stick and guide dog give it away, So another obvious complaint to bear, Does it give anyone the right to turn away? Angina; a heart problem can't be seen! Maybe even a dodgy bladder too! Lets face it, you can't see that either, Unless you have an accident outside the loo! A bowel disorder, maybe? But then, how can anyone know? They can't unless you tell them! Cos that's another one not on show! Diabetes, you can't see it can you? Unless you have to inject while out and about, And even then, you can hide it, So then, a few disabilities that 'aren't' out! Epilepsy, now this is a little tricky, Cos you can't hide that, it's not easy to do, Because if you have a fit in public, Then everyone around will see you! A brain tumour, you can't see that, A hole in the head, you can't see that either! Nope, I really have to say, Most people have no conception of either! A limp, well, I guess you may know of that? I mean to say at the end of the day, If we were walking you'd maybe not see that! Because everyone walks a different way! Spine, now then, let me think on this one! Yep, I guess you could hide that too, If you sat down all the time, No-one would know what was wrong with you! But a chair; hmmm, let me see now, Yep, of course you 'would' know! But tell me, and tell me true, Would you judge the person for having that on show? You see, if I'm 'walking' down the street, I jest you not, I get fellas who look my way, But just like that, they turn around, They judge and look the other way! But if I am in my car driving about, I get whistles and grins all the time, Why? Because they can't see my problem! To them, I look perfectly fine! Or sitting in a pub with friends, No chair, just the ones you all use! I don't need the chair for places like this, Once I am inside the door it's' great, not a ruse! Yep, don't get me wrong I can walk, Albeit not far at all, cos if I try, I am in such pain, it's too hard to attempt, So I plod around my flat; and why? …Because… I can sit at any given moment, Lie down as soon as I need to rest, In other words, I am in control, And really, its all for the best! But when I am out and about, The chair takes the pressure off my spine, It simply supports me as I walk… That way, everything is just fine! Just because I need a hand sometimes; Does not make me a pain in the azz!! So don't make me feel like one! A disability is only disabling; If you allow it to be!
