Absent Minded

The Voice

learn to live from
previously cheap advice
learn to fly
with no license
say goodbye
in four different languages
like it matters
no one will ever know the difference.

Learn to reinvent something
that isn't all upstairs
share the moments of twilight
between shaken breaths and stares
say to me
this is what you've been waiting for
and watch my jaw
crawl across the floor

spin the wheel of better fortune
tie the strings to loose ends, scandals
and abortions
all these pretty packages
someones going to find
just keep that in mind.

Learn to turn the tables of perception
with no alter ego
play with scissors and leave
the fire alone
practice your hand writing until it looks neat
my, you've found your professional mind again.

Fly away on a broomstick
snub the candle out with wax.
sunset is cold in seconds
and then comes the hexes,
let them sink their teeth in
until you can barely survive,
stay on top of it all
crunch your numbers
and work 9 to 5.

Force your words like ramblings onto the page
scrawl with the idle hand until something sings
mould your clay until something forces you to let go
knock on an unanswered door
and become more spiritual.
play the fool just one more time
fall in love
and close your eyes
learn to commit
now learn to let go
speed everything up
and learn to take it slow.

Softly in the grass
laying in the fields of wild flowers that grow
counting clouds and reminiscing
its time to learn to let go
it time to move on and learn again
find a new voice
and discover the birth of the first person.
