Poetic-Verses from ATHANASE

Buddha (English)

You left the town to live as a beggar
in the country of white water lilies,
where you dreamed the world on fire.

You preached a time beyond time,
and love as a river without end
that has no banks to burst.

Your words became a book
where we can breathe in happiness
and the fragrance of heavenly peace.

translated from the French of Athanase Vantchev de Thracy by Norton Hodges

Notes:

Buddha (circa 563 B.C. – circa 483 B.C. or 480 B.C.-400 B.C. ?) : Buddha, "the awakened", was the title given to Siddhartha Guatama, the son of a Nepalese rajah. He was born in Kapilavastu. According to tradition, Guatama left a life of luxury at age 29 or 30 and devoted himself to years of contemplation and self-denial, finally reaching enlightenment while sitting beneath a tree. Henceforth known as Buddha, he spent his life teaching disciples about his beliefs (embodied in the Eight Noble Truths) and the goal of achieving the enlightened state of Nirvana.
