Words and Verse

Borrowed Earth

Nid oes gennym hawl ar y ser,
Na'r lleuad hiraethus chwaith,
Na'r cwmwl o aur a ymylch
Yng nghanol y glesni maith.*
-Ellis Evans "Y Blotyn Du"

We cannot say which things are ours
For nothing did we ever make
The things we have, we've borrowed, for
We own no land nor tree nor lake.

The wood of which we've built our houses,
The windows made of humble sand,
The stones with which we pave our kitchen,
Are given us by God's great hand.

The very air of which we breathe
Is His alone and his to give.
For He gave us the breath of life
Gave unto us our will to live.

Like as the lord can give us life
So too can He take it away.
We've borrowed all his Earthly wonder
To yield it back on judgement day.

And thus ‘twill be when man must die:
We'll yield back mountain, wood and cove.
And join His grace, no more in debt,
As guests within his vault above.

*No single age can claim the stars
Nor claim the moon's sad gaze
No single age can claim the clouds
Within the azure haze
