Poetic-Verses from ATHANASE

The Keystone

'O Winter! frozen pulse and heart of fire!'

          Helen Hunt Jackson

Life's daily wounds,
the slow silent annihilation of the body
and this chaffinch's glorious song!

The emerald green calligraphy the
tremble of leaves paints on the silk of the sky!

The radiant veils of syllables
well met in the harbour of the soul,
syllables where the millennia
have left their tender treasure!

And that listening ear at the open window,
drinking in the mystical enchantment of the world!

O language, keystone that will unlock
time's residue from the salt of tears.

Words of purity and perfection!

translated from the French of Athanase Vantchev de Thracy

Translated into English by Norton Hodges
