The Last Time!

They played on the floor
in a sort of harmonic hum,
with a tiny touch of shrill!

I watched them through the pile
of books and papers piled high
on my desk!

I knew that this was the last time
they would all be together exactly
like this!

They seemed to be completely
unaware if this, and happily played
on inside their happy ignorance!

To me the pang of sadness
was painful and shattering!

I handed them each a Christmas present
which further added to the dull
mixture of end!

I watched each sparkling child
as they fiddled with the present
and played with vigour!

The hum of excitement and fun
filled the room and echoed off
the walls!

Then I asked them to stop playing
and to tidy the room and get ready
for home time, just like any other day!

The bell went and they excitedly
raced to the door after a hurried
goodbye!

When they had gone, I sat alone and
let my mind meander!

I could still hear their echo in
the room long after they had all gone!

I smiled and sighed at the same time!

Joy Weare.
