Road

I have drive that road so many times
Know it like an old friend
Know every inch of the way
Every corner wind and bend
I know just exactly where
Looking over to my right
Across dead ground of Lambwath fields
My home village first comes into sight
Some way to travel though
A few miles to go still
Past Mulberry Lane and
Down New Ellerby Hill
There's the old station house
On the corner at Whitedale
Long a private residence
Since they tore up the rails
I cycled there in the mornings
Come hail or fog snow or rain
To travel on to work in Hull
In the comfort of the train
Past Hornby's Farm
Home of school friend Jim
I couldn't even try a guess
At when I last saw him
Witty's Farm Pub Corner Main Street and Church Lane
Are they still known by those old names
Some buildings new some building gone but all in all
Still very much the same
To the little white cottage which
No matter where I live or roam
Will always stay there with me
As my spiritual home
I don't often drive that road these days
But quite often I do find
In the small sleepless hours of a morning
I travel it in my mind
