There was once a small but famous supper club located in the North Iowa town of Mason City. It was founded by a Greek family but was given a Russian name. It was called "The Troika" which in Russian means, three horse drawn sleigh, for the three Greek men who founded the restaurant. They were Sam, Denno, and George Karamitros. All have been gone now for a long time as is the restaurant, which flourished for over fifty years.
The Troika was very well known not only for its wonderful food but also for the owners and the people who worked there. It will never be forgotten by anyone who worked there or frequented the establishment. Over the years it brought many people together for life.
The closing line in the movie, Fried Green Tomatoes, goes something like this, "who would have ever thought a little place like this could ever bring so many people together and remain in their hearts forever?" The Troika did just that. You had to be there!
This poem is not only for Helen Karamitros, who as a little girl toiled along with her father and mother and who has pledged to keep alive the memory of the Troika and the Karamitros family. It is for anyone who ever ate our wonderful garlic steaks and famous hash browns or ate the great Italian spaghetti, made by a Greek, or for anyone who helped serve them.
Bless our precious memories!
Memories of a Place
O Helen, Helen, so aptly named for that fine lady of Troy
Of classic features, beauty internal, a great friend, a joy
Your touching sentiment surrounds you like a warm sunny day
Memories of a place that's in your heart and soul can never pass away
No longer is this place just a lowly building made of cement blocks
It's now open forever when you have the mind for there are no locks
Now that our cooks have nearly all gone to heaven we will surly succeed
Because now we can advertise with truth, that our food is heavenly indeed!
