A faint low noise came in the dark, a Mother clutched her breaking heart
For all at once she knew the sound, a son's return from where he'd been
The ghastly figure of her child, so fine a babe she'd never seen
Now begging for a bite to eat, hunting food in garbage cans
So deeply lost 'neath drugs decay
She did not know what else to say
He spent his days in twilight zones, he could not make a single plan
Wasted youth and faded dreams were his bed-fellows all the way

Tears of sorrow, cries of pain
Were his alone.....How she prayed!

He was hooked by dark despair, although he tried to break away
His friends, the derelicts of youth, encouraged him in sin's pursuit
Until a rainy night's cold wind drove him out to find a church,
Wherein he saw a ragged cross, which was the end of his long search
There he fell onto his face, pleading to be free of drug's disease
Asking God to bless the one who loved him still as he recalled
His Mother's tears, her pleading voice, her faithful prayers
On worn out knees

His pleas were heard by God that night and his sight became crystal clear
The blood of Christ's payed for his sins on that cross so rough and bare
A blessed peace eased his mind and 'twas a very changed young man
Who proudly ran with opened arms to greet his waiting Mother dear

For he was freed from drugs at last and with God's love forgot his past.

Today, the young man's vow hold true, to save those forgotten and outcast
He search the alley's darkest drains to offer hope to souls disdained
