…Mary…Oh but I broke my heart tonight, When I watched a story unfold, There before my eyes, was a little old lady, Who was 83 years old! She was travelling on a bus, Upstairs this lady went, But suddenly she fell down all the stairs, She was broken, twisted and bent. They took her to the hospital, But no sense could they make of she! So they had to do all sorts of tests, And be as methodical as can be. They found she had broken her spine, The spinal cord was fractured and split, Her face was a mess, her ribs were broken, All because of the way she landed and hit. Oh but she had such injuries, And to top it all, her heart was bad, She'd had an attack, is that why she fell? They'll never know, and it made them sad. I watched as I cried, cried as I watched, As the sister on duty wiped her eye… She couldn't get her words out… As she began to cry! She said she was in a critical state, So serious, said she, so sad, As she wiped her tears away… She said this little lady was very bad. She would never walk again, she said; And she even went on to say… If she survived, for she was so ill, All they could do, was pray. Mary never became conscious, Sadly, she stayed asleep, unaware… But watching the nurse's work… You could see the sadness that was there. 8 days later, Mary died, She never did wake up again… And so she slipped away so gently, No longer in any more pain! I couldn't stop the tears flowing, They poured out from my eyes… As I shouted to this Icon, God! This Icon so very wise! And asked what it is that we do in life, To cause such heartache and pain! Why did children and the elderly suffer that way! And more, just what was the gain! Because I can never comprehend you know… Just the whys and wherefores of life!
