I never really liked dogs or cats until Murphy
he was given to me as a gift
the day he came to live with us he was so afraid
he never barked - he just cried

he was well trained and the vet said
he was a full blood miniature Schnauzer
someone had found him on a busy highway near a large mall
more than likely he had jumped out of his owner car and was lost
he was half starved and covered with tar
he had to be shaved to get it all off him

he was such a sweet loving friend to me, my husband and family
our children were grown and were living lives of their own
Murphy filled the empty nest that we felt
everyday when it was time for my silver haired honey to come home
Murphy would run to the back door and wait for him
he then took turns going from me to him to be petted

he would stand at the window and watch the birds and squirrels playing
we fenced in the back yard so he could have space to run and play
he wasn't happy unless he was with us
he was with us for over fifteen years
during that time he was the best of friend and a great protector
he warned me if anyone was in the yard
He was always a perfect little man and a perfect gentleman

the day he died the vet told us to keep him as comfortable as we could
I held him in my lap for hours and slept on the sofa with him the night before
I laid him down and went to check on something and when I looked
over my shoulder he had passed on

we lay him to rest in the corner of our backyard
one of his favorite digging spots
flowers are now covering the spot and each time I look over in that corner
my heart breaks anew

one day a car was parked next to mine when I came out of the store
a silver Schnauzer was in it
I sat in my car and cried my heart out
Murphy, my dear friend you are so missed and so loved
