Mercy

Part II of Survivor

When ship had brought him back
His mission nearly done
More dead than alive was
The man who touched the Sun
They treated him with reverence
With respect and care
Giving little thought to the fact
He wished he wasn't there
A man who'd faced danger
With every risk assessed
Who'd led his life his way
And he'd felt truly blessed
Now felt he was in a prison
The worst there could have been
Trapped in the confines
Of that life support machine
But even worse
Worse that being dead
Was the constant sense of loss
Being trapped there in his head
The Tribunal assembled
They let him plead his case
Tears running from the blind eyes
Of that scarred and ruined face
The saw the twisted body
Saw trapped there inside
A man of proven courage
A man of dignified pride
They listened with respect
And when his words were through
There could only be one verdict
This the whole court knew
They played the Last Post
And as the notes were done
They switched off that machine to release
The man who'd touched the sun
