Poetry For Everyday People
Before Love
I gave you
my love,
I gave you
my feels
my compromise
my devotion
my attention
my understanding,
I gave you
and you said:
it wasn't enough,
well I moved on,
you moved on,
but the music played
and we danced again,
this time
I was numb
and you were
ready to take more,
yet the less
I gave the more
you loved,
the more I took
the better you felt,
the crueler I got
the happier you were,
and I played the game
kissing numbness
kissing death,
my heart unworthy
of this hurt, my
soul unaccompanied,
my mind planning
escape.
my love,
I gave you
my feels
my compromise
my devotion
my attention
my understanding,
I gave you
and you said:
it wasn't enough,
well I moved on,
you moved on,
but the music played
and we danced again,
this time
I was numb
and you were
ready to take more,
yet the less
I gave the more
you loved,
the more I took
the better you felt,
the crueler I got
the happier you were,
and I played the game
kissing numbness
kissing death,
my heart unworthy
of this hurt, my
soul unaccompanied,
my mind planning
escape.
