I love my son, my big Darnel,
But sometimes we don't get along very well;
Could be just as his father used to say,
"That boy's just like you in every way!"
We take hours trying to explain how we feel,
Convince the other of what's right and real;
Only to discover neither one of us is wrong,
Actually saying the same thing all along;
Often lots of words just get in our way,
Cloud important issues, distort what we say;
Darnel is a reasonable and rational man,
Whereas my emotions really do get out of hand;
I don't understand why we argue so much,
I feel depressed when we're out of touch;
In spite of everything else, we love each other,
I hope Darnel is glad that I am his mother;
When everything's all been said and done,
The fact of the matter is I'm proud of my son;
He has tender love for his children and his wife,
And he's added just the right touch to my life.
