MY DADDY'S LOVE

I remember when I was a little girl,
Daddy was the best man in my world;
All of a sudden things turned around,
My whole life flipped upside down!

Daddy used to bring me candy and toys,
Now he accused me of "messing" with boys.
I begged my mother to speak up for me,
Sure she'd be able to make him see;

That I was a good girl, the best of all,
For his foul suspicions there was no call.
It seemed everywhere he had vicious spies,
Who twisted the truth, told spiteful lies.

I moved away, went to live on my own,
Then one night, a shrill ring of the phone;
My Daddy had been burned in an accident,
My last weeks with him was time well-spent.

He apologized for causing me so much pain,
Was afraid I'd get hurt, couldn't explain;
Had wanted to tell me but didn't know how,
He'd loved me all along--I can see that now.
