A Sonnet For Him

Poetry Poem

A Sonnet For Her

Finally Free

Years of heavy burdensome weights
are at last removed.
Tight, painful shackles are unlocked.
My limbs are now weightless,
floating like helium balloons...
so carefree.
I stand tall for the first time.
My first step forward into freedom
is daunting.
The irony of it slaps me suddenly.
Stepping out into the sunlight
warms my skin,
awakens each cell.
I hear their soft whispers
of gratitude.
My footsteps founder under me.
I feel naked, unprotected,
thrust, unprepared, into this new world.
What I have dreamed for so long,
meets me at last.
Each faltering step takes me
toward that obscure mirage
that is my future.
