THE MEDIC, BLOOD DRENCHED AND AT
THE INFANTRYMEN'S BECKON CALL,
HELPED TO LIMIT THE NUMBER ON
THE WALL.

ALL THROUGH THE DAY AND OFTEN AT NIGHT
DOC DRESSES THE SAME AMPUTATIONS, TREATS THE
SAME WOUNDS, NOW ALIENATED, ISOLATED, HE
STAYS LOCKED IN HIS ROOM.

DOC LEFT THE NAM UNSCATHED, PHYSICALLY, NOT EVENA SCRATCH.
THE NAM WAS DEFINITELY AN ADVENTURE, A REAL
LIFE ACTION PACKED DRAMA, BUT THE PSYCHIATRIST
SAYS THAT DOC SUFFERS FROM TRAUMA.

PSYCHOLOGICALLY IMPAIRED BUT SAYS IT'S NOT RARE AND CAUTIONS
HIM NOT TO DESPAIR BECAUSE THROUGH THERAPY AND DRUGS HE MAY
ONE DAY BE ABLE TO LOVE AND GIVE THE HUGS THAT HIS CHILDREN CRAVE,
THEY BEING YOUNG AND UNAWARE THAT DOC LIVES IN A GRAVE.

FOR ONLY THE DEAD RETURNED FROM VIET NAM,
BUT DOC'S CHILDREN, THEY'RE YOUNG AND JUST
DON'T UNDERSTAND, SO THEY OFTEN WONDER,
"WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT MAN?"

THERE IS A LEGION OF THEM, THEY WALK
AND TALK, THE LIVING DEAD, NO
PHYSICAL IMPAIRMENT, THEY'RE JUST
EMOTIONALLY DEAD.

UNABLE TO FEEL COMPASSION, CUDDLE OR BE
CLOSE, THEY'RE THE REMNANTS OF UNCLE
SAM'S GREEN MACHINE. THEY'RE LIVING,
BREATHING, WALKING GHOST.

THEY MAY APPEAR TO BE ORDINARY JOES,
BUT IN REALITY THEY DIED A LONG TIME
AGO IN PLACES NAMED PINKSVILLE, SON MY, AP BIA,
OR DUC PHO.

THEY CAN TELL ONE ANOTHER ... IT'S IN THE EYES YOU KNOW;
EYES MUCH OLDER THAN THEIR YEARS, EYES THAT HAVE
WITNESSED MUCH BLOODSHED, DEATH AND TEARS.
BOYS TURN INTO HARDENED CALLOUS MEN IN THE COURSE OF A SINGLE YEAR.

IT NEVER CEASES, IT NEVER STOPS, ALL THROUGH THE DAY
AND ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT, CHOPPER AFTER CHOPPER,
FLIGHT AFTER FLIGHT, UNLOADING DEAD BODIES IS THE
MEDICS PLIGHT.

THE BODIES ARE STACKED NEATLY IN ROWS
DURING THE DRIZZLING RAIN, A RAIN
TO THIS DAY THAT STILL
EVOKES EMOTIONAL PAIN.

AS THE LAST VESTIGES OF BLOOD FLOW FROM THEIR VEINS IT MINGLES
WITH THE RED CLAY AS IT BECOMES INDISTINGUISHABLE
FROM THE RED MUD UPON WHICH THEIR COLD, TORN, MANGLED YOUNG BODIES
TEMPORARILY LAY.

FOR THE LIVING DEAD THAT RECEIVED NO PURPLE HEART
OR PHYSICAL WOUNDS AT ALL, MANY A TIME THEY HAVE
WISHED THAT THEIR NAMES WERE ETCHED UPON THAT
BLACK GRANITE WALL.

DAY AFTER DAY THEY RELIVE THE SAME MORBID
SCENES OF DEATH. THE SAME TRAUMA, THAT WAS THE
ACTION PACKED DRAMA THAT PLACED
58,000 NAMES UPON THE WALL.

ASLEEP OR AWAKE THEY RELIVE HOW THEIR BUDDIES DIED.
EVEN NOW YOU SEE THEM, WHEN THEY MAKE THEIR PILGRIMAGE
TO THE WALL, AFTER FORTY YEARS THEIR TEARS HAVE STILL
NOT DRIED, THEY CONTINUE TO CRY.

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE MERCIFUL IF THEY HAD
GOTTEN SHOT THROUGH THEIR STEEL POTS WHILE IN THE
JUNGLE OR RICE PADDIE FIELD, RATHER THAN RETURN TO
AMERICA AND BE HANDED A RAW DEAL.

NO DEBRIEFING, NO TREATMENT, NO PARADES
WHITE, NATIVE AMERICAN, LATINO OR BLACK,
THEY ALL WERE TREATED LIKE NI--ERS WHEN
THEY GOT BACK.

WINNERS OF EVERY MAJOR BATTLE BUT FALSELY BLAMED
FOR LOSING THE WAR, JUST LIKE NI--ERS DURING
AMERICA'S HEY-DAY OF APARTHEID, THEY WERE
SHOWN THE BACK DOOR.

TO THEIR GOVERNMENT THEY NO LONGER
HAVE ANY VALUE OR WORTH BECAUSE
AMERICA'S TRUE HEROES ARE BURIED
WITHIN THE BOWELS OF THE EARTH.

WITH TOMBSTONES NEATLY POSITIONED, PROPERLY ALIGNED
AND ARRANGED IN ROWS... DEAD IS HOW AMERICA PREFERS
TO HONOR HER HEROES! FROM ANY DIRECTION,
WHICHEVER ANGLE YOU GAZE,

THE TOMBSTONES, LIKE LIVING SOLDIERS, ARE ARRANGED
IN PERFECT ROWS, BECAUSE THAT'S HOW AMERICA
HONORS HER CLINICALLY DEAD HEROES.
