On the Beat

Walking streets when no one else is there
Feels like for once breathing
Unbreathed air

Streets that scream and shout with silence
That not too long ago screamed
Subdued violence

Flowers in wreathes in piles just scattered
Mark the very spot where that
Life was shattered

For days they hold their silent vigil there
Then they are cleared as though
No one longer cares

There was no thought of any real violence
Just two bodies sharing space that
Doesn't make sense

One drove off no words of sorrow spoken
Leaving the other's poor body
Bleeding and broken

They said he was quiet didn't cry or moan
Thanks at least that he didn't die
There all on his own

It is quiet now this early morning part of town
Hectic street life that bubbled fast
Has now slowed down

I walk my way on this and many a quiet street
Night patrol never ever knowing just
What I may meet

Walking streets when no one else is there
Feels like for once breathing
Unbreathed air
