Dad

It all began when I married your son
but in truth, I really gained a father
we were so alike, two minds as one
the clash of the titans when we would argue

A father more than in name
then your spirit was set free
the world just isn't the same
each season has its own memory

You were our Dino, our perpetual dinosaur
you will always be my true dad
although technically father in law
in truth, you were the father I never had

I look at your face in our photo
and memories flood me afresh
restoring a dresser, watching you smoke
haircuts, waving farewell when we left

You were so full of beans, so full of life
a powerful presence in everyone's days
the pain of losing you, sharp like a knife
God, I miss you in so many ways

But you loved me
and I loved you
forever will you be
the father I knew
