Poetry For Everyday People

Long Time No Grade

Of all the things
I'll never forget,

Ms. Miller
started the Art
program, Buies Creek
University, buy way of
Coats, Dunn, Lilington,
Angier, Benson and the
republic of the pond,

the camels are coming,

I became an art major
in two seconds, a
freshman,
fresh,
man,
I excelled
in pottery,
was on top of
all my assignments,

worked late, she
was cool, gave us
the key to the room,
we could bring our own
music, candles, wine in
a paper cup, I thought
she was snow
on a school day,

she was one of two
teachers I had a crush
on, Ms. Deegenario, seventh
grade,
Ms. Miller, first
year of collage,

I played
soccer, I struggled with
grades, we had to get a
weekly grade analysis, from
all our teachers to be eligible
to play,

I found out it was Ms. Miller's
birthday, I bought her three small
things, nervous about giving them
to her, I waited till I knew she
was alone, I walked into her office
gave her the gift bag, she smiled,
thanked me, I left as soon as I
could, although I wanted to stay
so bad,

a week later she called me into
her office, I prepared myself,

she was in love, she was going
to ask me out for a drink, she
thought I was a brilliant soccer
player, tremendous artist...

she said she didn't know
how to say this to me,
she pulled out the gift bag,
handed it to me, said she
could not accepted,
she couldn't be bought?
she thought I was trying
to buy a grade to play soccer,

I was eligible, didn't need
her grade, I wanted a kiss,

my heart was broke, I wanted her
to know, this was the worst
misunderstanding, I was shy, not
calculating, this was
true feelings,  no thought into it other
than a confused wild flower,

I never recovered from that, a
semester later I became a
history major, Ms. Miller was so
good she got offered a big time job,
we made peace, but she never got it?
I don't think she ever thought about
it, I can't say I have either,

Ms. Miller,
I wasn't trying
to get a good grade,
I had a big sloppy puppy
crush on you.
