 A Land Far Away

Oh, sweet mother land, so far away,
how I've longed for you in dismay.
Such an empty hole exists in my heart,
it's been there since we've been apart.

Yearning to run barefoot in your prairie,
stretching my arms, feeling light and airy,
as I would sing to melodies from songs of old,
that I've heard my mother's lips unfold.

Memories of many, she has shared with me,
for in this land, she gave life to me.
Crossed the border from her birth dwelling,
in search of freedom in a new landing.

Life-like illusions have begun to fade,
cutting my heart in two, just like a blade,
I can only reach out to you in my mind,
for my dreams of you are never blind.

My ancestors' roots lay in your grounds,
a foundation I shall treasure in memory,
for my soul will someday spread,
in your open meadows, filled with wild flowers.
