Poetic-Verses from ATHANASE

BRILLIANT DREAM (English)

BRILLIANT DREAM

'Ά μάγα Θαΰμα !
( Ah! Singular miracle!)

 Nonnos of Panopolis

In the shade of summer,
Your soul in mine, your voice in my voice!
The sea mixed its grace in the choir of lantanas
And all was magnificence, ecstasy, splendour and eternity.

Translated into English by Peter Cole

Notes:

Nonnos de Panopolis (Vth century A.D.): one of the most important Greec poets. Virtually nothing is known of Nonnos of Panopolis, except the attribution to him of the 48 books “Dionysiaca” and the 21 books of “Paraphrase of the Gospel of John”.
Lantana: shrub of the verbana family, native to the New World and African tropics. The different lantanas are cultivated for their ornamental foliage, fragrant clusters of flowers, and colourful blue-black fruits.
