Faculty Of The Mind: By Michael Ssemakula

IN MEMORY OF LONG GONE MOTHER: NALONGO FLORENCE NALUKENGE.

God gave us the wings and Mum; you taught us how to fly
She left us with her charm and image on our growing faces
We ought to always remember her name and wise council

She forgot to cancel our evenings together in her living room
And she forgot the smell of her perfume on our aging combs
And echoes of melodies in the corridors in her exact voice

She left us her knitting needles and care of housework
She didn't remember to take her contagious smile;
Forgot her relatives and friends in a family gathering

She forgot to take her bowls where she mingled
Wheat flour to make us her favorite wedding-like cakes
But she also forgot her tidy garden of banana plantains
And forgot the replica of her nice fingers on our hands

She left her features with all of us in God's choice
But she left her beautiful brains with some of us
She left her thinking and innovations scattered in all of us
And her jewels hanging by the bedside

She forgot a photo of us on the wall looking like lost geese
And also forgot the whole bunch of all of us her children
That she loved so dearly and fairly well.
