I know there are some people who I know that love The Garden as much as I do.
The rewrite may not seem as pretty or move in the same flow, but the original poem was about a woman trapped in a bad relationship and she decides to stay in this relationship at the end of the poem. The Garden (Revisited) tells about her moment of triumph when she decides to leave. Sorry if it upsets anyone. Susan
She walked the garden the whole day through,
Trying to recapture the things she once knew,
Trying to decide what she should do.
Torturing her brain of the where and how.
And her flowers gave no comfort now,
She had to flee, escape somehow,
And start her life anew.
Chorus
And she tries to recall,
How she had endured it all,
How far had she let fall,
So, she has finally come to know,
She must surely let him go.
And she climbs the garden wall.
The roses had all blossomed out,
There were no white irises still about,
She vanquished fear, yes every doubt.
She longs to walk the path once fair,
No more flowers blooming there,
Not one sweet rosebud for her hair,
And her mind begins to shout.
Chorus
And she tries to recall,
How she had endured it all,
How far had she let fall,
So, she has finally come to know.
She must surely let him go,
And she climbs the garden wall.
Here, used to grow the hyacinths,
Purple colored they were so intense,
No solitary bloom showed its presence.
The foxglove had long since died,
And so had the stocks, at this she sighed,
It was time she no longer denied,
She wanted to reclaim her innocence.
Chorus
And she tries to recall
How she had endured it all,
How far she had let fall,
So, she has finally come to know.
She must surely let him go,
And she climbs the garden wall.
She had held fast the memories
Of silver nights and golden seas,
here down the ancient winding leas.
The flowers were all dying now,
Their weary heads they did bow,
They'd caught the same ill somehow,
All had succumbed to her disease.
Chorus
And she tries to recall
How she had endured it all,
How far she had let fall,
So, she has finally come to know.
She must surely let him go,
And she climbs the garden wall.
To my friend Rich Carlton. From the free spirit which I am. Life cannot hold me down for I have traveled beyond the clouds and beheld the victory! Susan
