The Old Dream

"Mir träumte wieder der alte Traum…"
-Heinrich Heine

I dreamt the same old dream again
That I dream every night
I dreamt I saw your waving hair,
Your face, eyes shining bright.

I dreamt we sat within a field;
Full moon and stars above
I dreamt we sat with hands entwined
Caressing, pledging love.

I dreamt our hearts might pledge the same
Sweet pledge of timeless love
That we, that night, in that green field,
Had sworn by heav'n above.

My heart, I know, had sworn and pledged
That it should never falter.
Had promised you that it should not
Its pledge of ardor alter.

And your sweet heart did pledge its love
Within the reverie
But did not in the real world pledge
It's timeless love to me.

My dream was only partly true
Your lips did love aver
But your heart did not echo mine
It did not true love swear.
