Poetry For Everyday People

E Street Band

"fix your hair
 now real pretty
 and meet me tonight
 in Atlantic City"

For some of us,
these words,
this music,
has been part
of our journey,
our everyday,

for
a kid born in Egypt,
moving to America at
age ten, culture shock
in every breath, every step,
from the all Egyptian boy to
what are you?

Bruce introduced me
to Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry,
Chuck introduced me to
T Bone Walker, T. Bone
rock & roll and the blues
fit me like a soul,

as an American, an Arab American,
Muslim American, all the things
one day exotic next day taboo,
how anyone can talk anybody into
thinking religion is in any way
hateful, racist or violent?

it's easy to feel like an
outsider, spiritually, physically,
mentally,

"I see you walking
 baby down the street
 pushing that baby carriage
 at your feet"

these words, this music,
accompanying my life
so damn profoundly
(that's an all American line man)
 bring out the Buffalo wings),

these guys, this band,
solidified a torn part of
me, a lost part without a
home anywhere, Bruce got me
into Woody Guthrie, that's life
saving s-h-i-t man,

you made me wanna be
from New Jersey, Freehold,
Asbury Park, I walked your boardwalk
in the rain, trying to feel your memories?

"tracing your foot prints
 in the sand"

how do I thank you?
how do I drink a cold
beer with you?

"darling I don't wanna
 fade away"

"I'm just calling
 one last time
 not to change your mind"

 "here in Youngstown"

I saw you last
month in Orlando
with my wife
two days after
the funeral,

Danny's loss was felt
in tears, memories,
a reminder of time,

and at home for two days now
I've been playing
that youtube video
with him on stage with
you March 20th, 2008,

I guess
you all knew by then
this could be the last
time, what a band you are,
what a group of people,

the tears came
rolling down hard
as we saw you step out
onto the stage, missing
a brother, a friend, a band mate,
yet doing your job
like you always have
hurt and all,

thank you brothers.
