 The New Path
I walk this new road with her no longer here to hold my hand
Meeting new and old friends who some do and don't understand
The path from which I take
Of a scared little boy shrouded in heartbreak
A boy who opens his mouth to speak to his mum
And then reality hits him when he doesn't have one
Although she lives in his heart and mind
He knows another he will never find
The new road ahead has the same sky above him
But it isn't the physical environment that has changed but what's within
Lost in his thoughts and lost in his way
A once loved dog whose now has become a stray
A knowing that life is short
Understanding that so much more must be taught
Like a warrior come of age
Or a writer facing a blank page
Recognizing what lies before him will be his own making
And that all of life's opportunities are they for the taking
No matter how pain staking
He walks this new road still shaking
I walk this new path alone and scared
Not perceiving what should be prepared
Still reeling in the loss of what he once shared
Like a wild animal injured and snared
I can't turn back now for I have come this far
I will get to the end, but will always carry this scar.
