Poetic-Verses from ATHANASE

Ataraxia (English)

for Nichita Stanescu

'I am a son of the earth and the starry sky,
that is why my soul is immortal.'

Anghelos Sikelianos

Our simple house stands near the river,
there shrill nightingales keep us company,
the moon fills their little throats with song.

A delicate wind rocks them
where they sit like tiny diamonds
on the diaphanous branches
of the green willows!

The gentle beating of their wings
awakens words of tenderness
that lay sleeping in the arms
of our garden flowers.

Sweet words, words of happiness, immortal words
like the poems of those
with hearts that know how to love!
