I said goodbye today,
gently untying the white satin cord
connecting our hearts.
It took my breath away,
like an unexpected wave
that sucks you under.
How do I forget your face
that dances freely behind darkened lids?
The delete key wears thin,
taking quite a pounding,
ineffective.
A familiar dance takes blind steps
caressed by vacant arms.
Shallow breaths deny starving lungs,
unfulfilled.
With slate wiped clean
and page turned to a new chapter,
I tremble at the newness
of it all.
