Rosa lived in the village of Hamburg, Germany.
Her tiny house did sit under the great elm tree.
Her skin was translucent as the moon's holy light
and her hair was the color of summer's sunlight.

The good king one day dressed up as a pauper
wanting to see for himself if his kingdom ran proper.
So dressed as a poor beggar he rode into the town
and he took in the sights till the sun did go down.

All the people in the village did laugh at the king.
They spewed crude comments about everything.
Disheartened, down trodden he felt quite ashamed
as all their misfortune on the king they had blamed.

His heart was broken as the sun was setting.
He was tired and dejected already regretting.
His Kingdom was not perfect and he was a joke.
Cruel comments had hurt him his spirit it broke.

Sadly, the king did silently ride upon his steed.
It had been a most enlightening day. Oh yes, indeed.
Here sat the home of some poor peasant he cried.
I wonder if they might let me come inside.

He walked ever so slowly to the cottage's door
thinking he would be rejected, shunned as before
but the fair maiden, Rosa, who greeted his gaze
caused the young king to falter, lost in his daze..

She asked him to enter and gave him a chair.
She put soup on the table and offered to share.
He ate with a hunger he had never had before.
When she offered him seconds he ate some more.

"And how is the potato soup?" she now asked.
"Wonderful!" he replied with a full belly he basked.
Supper was done the king wanted to know
Why the maiden had feed him and treated him so.

"We are all people," the young woman replied,
"no matter our clothes our souls we can't hide."
The king received more than a full belly that night
and he sent for the maiden in the morning's light.

He wanted to thank her for the kindness received
and to tell her himself of how he had deceived.
He wanted dear fair Rosa forever at his side
to have her and hold her as his gentle bride.

Moral of the story is simply this:
Love doesn't always start with a kiss
but with the kindness we do show
that's what makes love to grow.
