Poetry For Everyday People

Vibing Home

Walking home with:
half a pound of swiss
cheese, a pound of pastrami,
pickles, fresh baguette,
spicy mustard, thinking
for the time being, I got
it all figured out, six pack
of Guinness, going home to eat
lunch,

the air is cool, the pastrami
smells divine, the baguette still
warm, my favorite song playing in
my head, Flintstones DVD is going
in, I'm pulling all the stops to make
myself feel home, safe, quilted, the air
is cool, my nose freezing, smelling sweet
pastrami, smelling childhood,

it was a hundred years ago today
I smelled pastrami for the first
time, coming home after playing
football in the snow,

sitting by the furnace, biting into
forever, feeling just about as good
as it gets.
