What sorrow filled His gentle heart?
When tears down cheeks quietly crept
And trickled down from loving eyes
Those heartbreaking times when Jesus wept
When He stood upon the mountain high
And gazed out over the outstretched city
He would have gathered all the people to Him
For in His heart was love and pity
He offered His protection as a mother hen
Safe under her wings chicks would be kept
But they would not come and accept His love
No wonder Jesus stood there and wept
He knew the people cared not for Him
As tears kissed loving tender eyes
And He knew they would mock and scorn
When on a cross for them He dies
And what of tears that freely flowed
When in darkened grave Lazarus was kept
And sorrowing ones stood all around
It broke His heart and Jesus wept
He ordered the stone to be rolled away
From the opening of the cave
And with deep emotion in His voice
Commanded Lazarus to rise from his grave
How much He loved; they said of Him
When Lazarus in death no longer slept
And marvelled at the crying Saviour
When Jesus stood that day and wept
No one wiped away His falling tears
Those heartbreaking times when Jesus wept
But He will wipe away all of our own
When His redeemed in Heaven are safely kept
