Heart Of The Matter

Lost Love

A couple of years back, a poet sent me some poems to have a look at, and crit for him. They told a very sad story of lost love and a lifetime of longing, with no winners in the game. I wrote this and sent it to him . . . . .  he was delighted though full of regret.

I read a collection of poems,
From a man who was baring his soul,
His heart poured out on the pages,
This man, who was only, half whole,

His true love, he's won and then lost her,
To another who'd come on the scene,
He did what he could to forget her,
But re-lived his impossible dream,

He thought about her every morning,
And every day, throughout his life,
It was sad, because she also loved him,
But he'd made another, his wife,

So he carried his life on without her,
And he saw her again, now and then,
Each time, increasing their ardour,
But sadly, remaining, just friends,

There's a moral in this man's sad story,
When love reaches out to caress,
Don't let it slip through your fingers,
And don't settle for anything less.
