rhapsody in purple

rhapsody in purple

she heard the sound of his coming
long before she saw
from the jingling of the bells
on the fools cap that he wore

he sang to her of love
and he played upon the lute
as he danced his clownish dance
in his purple three piece suit

he spun and he twirled
poured forth his very soul
sang come to me my darling
come and make me whole

and the crowd that there gathered
applauded his twinkling feet
called go for it young lady
make his life complete

and he whirled and stepped
oh how that young fool danced
as she sat there in amazement
bewildered captivated entranced

he floated across the grass
played slalom with the trees
then before she knew it
he was before her on his knees

as she looked at him in wonder
looked at him with joy
kissed him on the cheek
of course you very silly boy

and the crowd clapped with rapture
as he led them parading up and down
and stranger danced with stranger
in that little country town

and little trysts were made
and the odd occasion planned
and once strangers stood there
many shyly holding hands

he sang to her of love
and he played upon the lute
as he danced his clownish dance
in his purple three piece suit

and she sat there and she smiled
as she fingered in her lap
all those jingly jangly bells
that hung from his old fools cap
