Heart Of The Matter
I Could Have Lied
I guess I could have lied to you,
Betrayed a bitter truth,
But lies betray the honesty,
Insidious, uncouth.
It's true I fell in love with you,
I learned to play your game,
You set out to control me,
You were driving me insane.
You sat upon a pedestal,
Looked down on me from high,
Outside you see a smiling face,
Inside, you heard me cry.
You took away my self-esteem,
I retreated to my shell,
What started as a fine romance,
Turned into my living hell.
I tried so hard to please you,
And I lost a part of me,
The part you fell in love with,
The happy: and carefree.
I look at you, with cold blue eyes,
And anger deeply rising,
Don't tell me what you think, I want,
You're merely fantasising.
You've fallen from your pedestal,
You've fallen hard from grace,
So sorry, if I've shocked you,
I can see it in your face.
I dared to stand against you,
No longer meek and mild,
A woman stands before you,
Not a frightened little child.
I stare at you, defiant,
My self-esteem restored,
I guess I could have lied to you,
But in truth, I'm tired and bored.
I no longer need to please you,
Or to beg for your approval,
So, please gather your possessions,
And arrange, for their removal.
