Poetry For Everyday People

My Uncle

I wanted to catch
you before you left,

I was young and
didn't know how to
say goodbye to my hero,

somehow I did know
it was the last time
I was going to see you,

you taught me
some of the simplest
yet most complicated
things in life,

you taught me to
love forever, to
draw, paint, dig art,
music, notice stars,
flowers, tree leaves,
people's feelings,

all the little
things I Cherish now,
walking
for miles, hours,
looking at buildings,
gardens, downtown,

smelling life, dreaming
in motion,

you taught me
that there are
people in life
that teach beyond:
Nobel prizes,
beyond speeches,
beyond invention,
pure,

and I guess that's why
thirty one years
later, in the suburbs,
in America, eleven p.m.
in a quiet peaceful house,
cold air coming through the
window, thanksgiving around
the corner,

I still love
and miss you,

as a fresh
goodbye.
