Once upon a time, a long time ago, when the grandpas and grandmas of today were little children, there lived a little boy in a little town in Iowa, called Nora Springs. This little town sat high on the limestone cliffs over the Shell Rock River. Nora Springs was a beautiful little town then in 1948 and is that to this day.
The little boy's name was Ronnie and he loved his little town. He loved sledding on the many hills around and in the little town. He loved skating on the frozen Shell Rock River. Ronnie and his friends, Roger, Billy, Freddie, Bobby, Danny, Marilyn, John, Sharon and Gayle would always be the first ones skating on the frozen millpond. All these friends lived in a part of town called "Old Town".
This year Ronnie and all his friends were sad and worried. Christmas was almost here and there was no snow. It was very cold in Nora Springs and in fact all of Iowa but there was no snow. How could Santa Clause possibly come without snow? The river was frozen deep and being the ice was not covered with snow made it much easier to skate on but nobody had the heart to do much skating. This was the topic of much conversation and even though the mothers insured them that because Santa was magic he would find a way and who knows there was still time for snow to come even yet.
The thing was that just about everybody had already sent his or her letters to Santa asking for a "Flexible Flyer". This was the very latest in sleds and would hold three sliders or more. Now they had a double worry, maybe Santa couldn't get there and then if he did get there and he did bring that wonderful sled, what would they do with it if there were no snow!
Now in Nora Springs on the Saturday before Christmas all the storekeepers sponsored a free movie and a visit from Santa himself. Each and every little girl or boy got a big bag of candy from Santa to boot. The sad thing was that the movie was a Christmas movie and in almost every outdoor scene it was snowing. When the group came out of the movie it was bitter cold but the sun was shining brightly in a clear blue sky. Christmas was just three days away and yet there was no snow!
On Christmas Eve all the churches in that little town had their Christmas program. All the children had pieces to speak and presents from their Sunday school teachers and even another visit from Santa and more bags of candy. This was a very special night. Still the children were sad and worried.
As everyone was putting on their wraps in the church vestibule the children could hear the wind come up and begin to howl. As the children and their parents walked home to "Old Town" in a group, wonder of wonders it began to lightly snow. By the time they got home it was snowing so hard it could be called a blizzard. It snowed hard all-night and snowed all of Christmas Day. In fact anyone planning to go out of town for Christmas stayed home that year. Santa did come and Ronnie and his friends had lots to talk about in school when Christmas vacation was over two whole weeks later. That winter would go down in record as one of the snowiest in history. And I bet I know what all those kids prayed for in church on that long ago Christmas Eve, don't you?
God Bless our precious memories! And always remember that while snow is nice for Christmas in Iowa, in Bethlehem there was no snow.
