It really, really irks me you know!
When it is muted I am unable!
But I have to say, at the end of the day;
It's not my mind that's unstable!!!
Some people think we are stupid!
And think we don't have a brain!
Some even think we play on others!
Well on them I lay the blame!
Just because we are well…unable;
To do something that others can do,
Doesn't mean we are ‘disabled',
Cos that sounds like a broken loo!!!
Disabled to me means it's broken!
But I am not broken, not me!
It's just that some things are difficult;
Like, well now, let me see…
If the lift is broken, it's disabled,
And if the lock on the shed won't lock,
Then to me, they are all disabled…
Just like the broken fingers on a clock!
But for me, there are some things I can't do!
And others, well I find my own way!
And though it may not seem quite right,
Who the hell has that right to say…?
…Say that I am disabled!
For I am not broken or rusted you see!
All that it is, is I am a little less able,
Than some other people seem to be!
But I can do most everything!
That other people can do with ease!
Because I have my own little way of doing it;
So stop the disabled word, oh please!
Tonight I was a little upset you see;
When my friend came over for lunch,
And told me what was said about us;
Well to that I say; ‘thanks a bunch!!!'
The thing is this, we are best friends,
And she comes over when I am unwell,
Brings me food and helps me a lot,
She does the shopping as well!
But the other day she was told,
By her family member - no less!
That she was not my friend, but a carer,
And I was angry as heck, I guess!
For in those words she was saying,
That I wasn't a friend to her,
But more, I was something dependant!!
And I say it, that's just not fair!!
And it is also so very insulting!
That she said that, no, its not fair!!
Because in the same breathe in her words;
She was saying I wasn't a true friend to her!
That was such a stupid thing she said!
And most terribly insulting to me!
For she is my friend, and I her friend,
But some people just can't see…!!
…See that people like me of plenty;
Are not people who play on bad health!
For I know of one thing that I am!
I am a person with strength of wealth!
For the determination in me true!
Helps me in many a plight!
Gets me through the dark days,
When I am blinded by the light!
And just because I am like this,
Doesn't mean my friend is a carer to me!
For I am as independent as I am!
And I succeeded and aspired to all I want to be!!
I am not disabled; broken or stupid!
And I am as true as any friend can be!
For I am as able as God made me true!
And life has been very good to me!
Well, ok, so the health hasn't been good,
But I am a most perfectly honest and true friend!
And I can honestly say, right here and now!
I have much insight and wisdom to lend!
So yes she helps me a lot in practical ways,
And I help her in the skills of life!
Between us both, we have the lot!
And we always work through any strife!
And though I was recently asked;
What was wrong with the man in my life!
I simply said; ‘nothing! He's fit and healthy!'
And I am going to be his wife!
‘Oh, I thought he was disabled as well!'
She said; as she gaped and stared at me;
I looked at her and asked her why that was;
Why should he be imperfect; should he be!
She had the grace to blush in shame!
People like her make me feel so blue!
For once again, she thinks I am broken!
And so my man should be broken too!
So back to that which I started on!
This comment that was untactful and hurt!
Maybe she should put her brain into gear,
Before any more hurtful words she may blurt!
I am not broken, nor am I dependant!
I am as good as the next person that's true!
And before you judge another; please…
Don't make that other person feel sad and blue!
