A soft glow of moonlight
  Drapes the new fallen snow
The shadows are dancing
In the cold winds that blow
While off in the distance
  A silhouette appears
The sight of a stranger
  Grips my body with fears
I watch as he's coming
Closer and closer still
I no longer feel safe
  And shutter with a chill
I move from the window
And over to the side
Peeking behind curtains
  It feels safer to hide
But still he draws nearer
His face now in full view
I see signs of torment
  Maybe rage, I've no clue
The phone is not working
  Thanks to ice laden limbs
As he nears the front porch
  All my hope quickly dims
I see him hunched over
  What is that he's folding
He's not wearing a shirt
  It's a coat he's holding
This must be a madman
  I'm now frozen in fear
The sound of his footsteps
  At the door disappear
I look in my horror
  That it's not even locked
The doorknob is turning
  As it opens I'm shocked
To see a bloody hand
  Push the door open wide
I'm starting to feel faint
  The strangers now inside
Without hesitation
He runs straight up to me
A thrust to my stomach
I look down and I see
In my arms is his coat
  There is blood everywhere
I looked back at his eyes
  There is a distant stare
He turns and runs outside
  Closing the door behind
My back slides down the wall
A chill goes down my spine
I look out the window
  And watch him disappear
Now sitting on the floor
  A faint crying I hear
I look down in my lap
  At the blood covered coat
I start to unfold it
There's a lump in my throat
A babe, no, a newborn
It's chord tied in a knot
I arose to my feet
As my mind raced a lot
Clean towels, warm water
Think! Think! What do I need
I gathered my senses
I had no time to heed
I did all that I could
And now held close to me
This new life was sleeping
  Resting so quietly
I looked out the window
  At the new fallen snow
The shadows were dancing
In the moonlights soft glow
While off in the distance
  A silhouette appears
A sight so disturbing
My eyes swell up with tears
I ran to get blankets
Then ran for all my life
To reach and help this man
  Now carrying his wife
I draped them with blankets
  And led them back inside
Showed him where to lay her
  And then the baby cried
Giving her the infant
  I noticed that her skirt
Un-torn and that the man
  For bandage used his shirt
Seeing to each their needs
  Making them feel at home
Mother and child resting
  Left me with him alone
Motioning with his hands
  For something which to write
I gave him pen and paper
And then turned on a light
While he wrote I watched him
He'd look at me and smiled
Then went back to writing
  For quiet a little while
After neatly folding it
He placed it in my hand
Looked in on wife and child
  And in their doorway stand
The letter he wrote me
  Explained the night he had
In route to hospital
  How everything turned bad
The snow on the highway
Had caused the car to skid
Off the road getting stuck
  No matter what they did
He had to go get help
  But didn't get very far
Hearing his wife screaming
He ran back to the car
His wife was giving birth
He had to help her now
Uncertain what to do
  Still they managed somehow
And then the engine died
  No longer giving heat
Not one car came by them
  The cold a sure defeat
Seeing just a mailbox
  Up the driveway he ran
The lights on in my house
  Strengthened this weary man
He saw me from a far
  In the window I stood
He cried out for my help
  His voice was no good
The distance he had run
All he could do was smile
From my house to the road
  It is almost a mile
Without even a shirt
  Three trips he had made
To give his loved ones warmth
  Their lives had been saved
He turned and looked at me
A tear was in his eye
He whispered, God bless you
  And I started to cry
Then he knelt by my side
With his hand wiped my tears
Kissed my cheek so softly
It cleansed me of my fears
He then went and laid down
  Beside his wife and child
Closing the bedroom door
He looked at me and smiled
I walked to the window
And saw a new day start
The sun began to rise
New warmth was in my heart
The blanket of new snow
Glistening in the light
And off in the distance
  A figure caught my sight
I rubbed my now tired eyes
  It wasn't there at all
The baby starting crying
  I heard the mother call
I opened the door and asked
  If she needed anything
Holding the baby at breast
I saw her wedding ring
She asked me how she got here
  Remembering her car
I told her she was carried
And then told her how far
I asked where was her husband
She looked at me and cried
She said it's been two months now
  Since her husband had died
My hands started trembling
  The letter fell from them
I ran to get the coat
And shirt that came from him
But nothing could be found
  They simply were not there
I picked up the letter
  Unfolded it with care
Tears fell on a blank page
  This just couldn't be true
But in the tears I saw them
  Whispered words…God bless you!
