LETTERMAN'S ON---LET HER

My son is here
Back five days
From Arizona

Away from here
Close to L.A.
Somewhere on the border

I stay here
Over 23 years
He's not that old yet

Why should I leave
The comfort of the sun
The moon waxing and waning

Come wax me
Freedom I desire
Weightlessness of floating

Relax and drift
Children leaving
Sister can go on

Will the silence hurt
God, I am not rhyming
Humanly selfish

Early mornings rest
Poet composes
Symbols of thought

Marks that have meaning
Soul's intercourse
Mother is old

David Letterman's on
Married to my verse
Bound to letting go.
